Ethiopia has officially commenced construction on a high-speed rail line connecting its capital Addis Ababa with the Port of Djibouti, a project expected to revolutionize trade and transport in the Horn of Africa.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated the project, which will cut current freight transit times by over 50%, significantly enhancing Ethiopia’s export capacity and reducing costs.
“This rail line is a vital artery for our economy. It will accelerate growth, create jobs, and integrate our markets with global supply chains,” said Ahmed.
Funded through a combination of government bonds, Chinese loans, and private investment, the project spans over 750 kilometers and will feature modern, energy-efficient trains capable of speeds up to 250 km/h.

Logistics companies and exporters have welcomed the news, citing improved reliability and capacity compared to road transport. Neighboring countries are also expected to benefit from increased connectivity.
The rail is scheduled for completion in late 2028, marking a milestone in Ethiopia’s infrastructure modernization efforts.
