Putin Played Trump Like a Violin” — But Now Trump May Be His Only Lifeline, Says Ex-MI6 Chief

The former head of the UK’s intelligence agency MI6 says Vladimir Putin “played Donald Trump like a violin” but now, after devastating battlefield losses in Ukraine, the Russian president may see Trump as his only way out.

Appearing on BBC’s Newsnight, Sir Alex Younger, who led Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service from 2014 to 2020, didn’t mince words.

“Putin created this idea that he and Trump are mates… that they’re equals who could solve the world’s problems together,” he said. “But now it’s becoming very clear to Trump that Putin’s only plan is to crush Ukraine and he’s making Trump look like a muppet.”

Younger’s comments are the strongest yet from a Western spy leader about the deep and strange relationship between Trump and Putin one that has long raised eyebrows in Washington and abroad.

Putin’s War Is Failing — and Trump May Be His Last Hope

With the Russian military losing tens of thousands of troops and facing heavy sanctions, Putin’s options are narrowing.

Sir Alex claims the Kremlin leader has “overplayed his hand” and is now looking at a possible Trump re-election as the only chance to freeze the war, rewrite the narrative, and regain leverage.

“Trump is his only answer,” Younger said bluntly.

Trump, who has repeatedly said he could “end the Ukraine war in 24 hours,” has also faced criticism for downplaying Putin’s aggression and undermining NATO. A second Trump term could dramatically shift U.S. support for Ukraine which many say is exactly what the Kremlin wants.

Is Trump Being Used or In Control?

Younger’s warning revives a long-standing fear: Is Trump truly independent in his thinking or has Putin played him from the start?

While Trump insists he’s “tougher on Russia than anyone,” critics say his record tells a different story from refusing to condemn Russian interference in U.S. elections to cozy photo ops with Putin in Helsinki.

As the 2024 race heats up, so does the global concern: If Trump returns to the White House, what happens to Ukraine and what does Putin get in return?
