Marion County Sheriff Rick Landers says he will not enforce the latest federal gun control measure signed into law last month, calling it “an unconstitutional attack on law-abiding citizens.”
Landers made the statement during a televised press conference, adding, “We will not waste resources targeting Americans for exercising their Second Amendment rights.”
The law, passed in response to a recent surge in mass shootings, requires additional background checks and limits certain high-capacity firearms. Several rural counties in Florida have expressed opposition, but Landers is the first sheriff in the state to publicly reject enforcement.
Legal experts say Landers’ stance may trigger a legal showdown between state and federal authorities. Civil rights groups have warned that selective enforcement could put public safety at risk.
Governor Ron DeSantis has not commented.
