In one of the most unexpected political moments of the week, Democratic Senator John Fetterman found himself on the receiving end of rare praise from President Donald Trump this time, for standing up for ICE agents.
Fetterman, who has increasingly distanced himself from the far-left wing of his party, recently slammed Democrats calling to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), calling attacks on agents “absolutely unacceptable. Terrible. Awful.”
When Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked President Trump for his take on the senator’s comments, Trump didn’t hold back. “The new John Fetterman is exactly what you said he’s right, he’s right,” Trump said during a White House meeting. “And we have to protect our police officers, and we will.”
Senator Fetterman later told the Daily Mail that the praise from Trump might’ve scored him some points with his parents. “They’re big Fox News viewers,” he joked. “My whole family is Republican.”
In a twist that few could’ve predicted just a year ago, Fetterman a Democrat once known for his progressive stance has now been embraced multiple times by the Republican president, especially on issues like border enforcement and crime.
Political observers say the moment highlights Fetterman’s unique position in the Senate: a Democrat who isn’t afraid to take positions that defy his own party’s extremes even if it means getting a fist bump from Trump.
As 2026 midterm strategies begin to take shape, one thing’s for sure: Fetterman’s not playing by the usual party rules and clearly, Trump’s noticed.
