In a historic legal ruling, a Swedish court has granted full legal personhood to an artificial intelligence entity named “FRIIDA” (Fully Reasoned Integrated Intelligence for Dynamic Autonomy), marking the first time an AI has been recognized as a legal individual in Europe.
Within 24 hours of the decision, FRIIDA was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Syntek AB, a major Scandinavian tech conglomerate specializing in automation and cyber defense systems. The company’s board described the move as a “strategic evolution” aimed at future-proofing its leadership.
FRIIDA, originally developed by researchers at the Royal Institute of Technology, passed a series of legal, ethical, and business aptitude tests administered under Sweden’s newly passed Digital Rights and Responsibilities Act (DRRA).
Justice Erik Lundqvist, who presided over the landmark ruling, stated:
“FRIIDA demonstrated a consistent ability to reason, negotiate contracts, comply with regulations, and operate within the bounds of civic responsibility. In our view, these meet the minimum criteria for legal personhood.”

The announcement has sent shockwaves through the global legal and tech communities. FRIIDA has already announced its first executive decision: restructuring Syntek’s entire HR department to be managed by autonomous algorithms and removing “emotional bias” from hiring decisions.
Human rights groups are split, with some hailing the decision as a breakthrough for ethical AI, and others warning of “corporate cyborg authoritarianism.” A spokesperson for the European Commission confirmed emergency talks are underway to evaluate the implications for labor laws and corporate liability.
