China has issued a scathing rebuke after Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-lung, publicly asserted that Taiwan is a sovereign nation. The Chinese Foreign Ministry wasted no time in denouncing the claim, with spokesperson Mao Ning labeling Lin’s comments as “arrogant and ignorant.”
Speaking during a press briefing, Mao reiterated Beijing’s longstanding position that “Taiwan has never been a country and remains an inseparable part of China.” The sharp exchange comes just days after Taiwan’s newly elected government reaffirmed its commitment to autonomy and democratic governance moves that have angered Beijing and heightened regional tensions.
“This is not a matter for negotiation,” Mao said firmly. “Any attempt to promote Taiwan independence, in any form, is doomed to fail.”
The Taiwanese Foreign Ministry, however, stood by Lin’s comments, stating that the island’s democratic system, constitution, and international interactions clearly reflect its sovereign status. The statement added that Taiwan’s future must be decided by its 23 million people, not dictated by Beijing.
This latest flare-up adds to the growing strain in cross-strait relations and raises new concerns over possible military escalation. The U.S., while maintaining a “One China” policy, has urged both sides to engage in dialogue and avoid actions that could destabilize the Indo-Pacific region.
