Walmart Recalls 850,000 Water Bottles After Exploding Lids Leave Two Customers Blind

Walmart has issued an urgent nationwide recall of 850,000 stainless steel water bottles after two customers were left permanently blind from injuries caused by exploding caps.

The recalled Ozark Trail 64-ounce water bottles were sold in Walmart stores across the United States since 2017. According to a statement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the bottles’ screw-top lids may “forcefully eject” when opened, particularly if they’ve been used to store food or certain beverages for an extended time.

So far, the agency has received three confirmed reports of customers being struck in the face by the violently ejected lids. Two of those victims suffered irreversible blindness after being hit directly in the eye.

The water bottles are silver with a black cap, featuring the Ozark Trail logo on the side a popular line among outdoor enthusiasts and families.

“This is a serious design flaw,” said product safety attorney Melinda Grossman. “We’re not talking about a minor injury we’re talking about people permanently losing their vision from what should be a safe household item.”

Consumers are being urged to immediately stop using the bottles and return them to Walmart for a full refund. Walmart has not yet confirmed whether additional compensation or legal settlements will be offered to injured customers.

The case highlights the danger of pressure buildup in insulated containers, especially when used to store hot food or carbonated drinks a warning that many consumers may not have received clearly on labeling.

If you own one of these bottles, check the model and lid immediately. Safety shouldn’t be an afterthought, especially when lives and eyesight are at risk.
