When floodwaters rushed into their Houston home on July 4, Vanessa Ortiz grabbed her three children and tried to make it to higher ground. Only she made it out alive.
“I was holding their hands,” she sobbed. “The water came so fast. I tried… I tried.”
Ortiz is now staying with relatives, but her life is shattered. Her children ages 3, 6, and 9 are among the more than 100 victims of what’s now being called the worst Texas flood disaster in decades.
Her story has ignited new demands for better flood warning systems and evacuation support for low-income families.
“No parent should have to bury their babies because help didn’t come fast enough,” said one community advocate.
