Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed growing public assumptions that the National Assembly is in a constant fight with the Executive, saying lawmakers are elected to partner not battle the president in driving national progress.
Speaking in a special documentary aired to mark President Bola Tinubu’s two years in office, Akpabio said, “We are not elected to wear boxing gloves. This is not a wrestling match. We were sent here to create laws and support policies that benefit the Nigerian people.”
His remarks come amid rising criticism over perceived silence from the legislature on key national issues including economic reform, security lapses, and budget padding. Akpabio emphasized that collaboration, not confrontation, is what moves Nigeria forward.

“There are times when disagreement is necessary. But we must remember that our ultimate responsibility is to the people, not political drama,” he added.
His comments are already drawing mixed reactions from political observers, with some calling it an honest reflection of governance, while others argue that the National Assembly must do more to hold the Executive accountable.
