“I Can’t Use the Name That Made Me Famous” — Papa Ajasco Actor Speaks Out

“I Can’t Use the Name That Made Me Famous” — Papa Ajasco Actor Speaks Out

For many Nigerians who grew up watching television in the 1990s and early 2000s, the name Papa Ajasco brings back memories of laughter and family entertainment.

The character, known for his bald head, large round glasses, and humorous misadventures, became one of the most recognizable figures on Nigerian television through the sitcom Papa Ajasco & Company.

But behind the laughter, the actor who played the role says his reality has not been easy.

“I Cannot Use the Name Papa Ajasco”

In a recent statement circulating online, the actor Abiodun Ayoyinka opened up about the struggles he has faced over the years after becoming famous for the role.

According to him, the character name “Papa Ajasco” was legally registered by veteran producer Wale Adenuga, meaning he cannot freely use the name for personal or commercial opportunities.

“That particular character has been registered by Wale Adenuga. I can’t use the name Papa Ajasco. It has limited my opportunities. Things have never been okay for years back now. I’m always thinking every day.”

The statement has sparked conversations across social media about the realities actors face when the characters that make them famous are owned by production companies.

The Man Behind the Famous Character

Ayoyinka became widely known when he played Papa Ajasco in the comedy series produced by Wale Adenuga Productions.

The show became one of the most popular Nigerian sitcoms and introduced many memorable characters including:

Pa James

Boy Alinco

Miss Pepeiye

Ajasco’s family

For years, the program entertained millions of viewers across Nigeria and beyond.

However, because the character was created and owned by the production company, the brand and name remained under their control.

When Fame Doesn’t Equal Ownership

The situation highlights a common issue in the entertainment industry.

Actors often become strongly identified with a character but do not legally own the rights to that character.

This means they may not be able to:

Use the character name for endorsements

Perform under the character brand independently

Monetize the identity that made them famous

For Ayoyinka, this reportedly limited the opportunities he could pursue after leaving the show.

Nigerians React

The revelation has sparked mixed reactions online.

Some people believe producers have the legal right to protect characters they create.

Others argue that actors who bring those characters to life should also benefit from the success of the brand.

Many Nigerians who grew up watching the show say the story is a reminder of how complicated the entertainment industry can be behind the scenes.

A Legacy That Still Lives On

Regardless of the challenges, the character Papa Ajasco remains one of the most iconic figures in Nigerian television history.

For many viewers, Abiodun Ayoyinka will always be remembered as the man who made the character unforgettable.

And even if the name belongs to the production company, the memories the character created for millions of Nigerians will likely live on for generations.
