From crumbling infrastructure and record homelessness to social division and economic precarity, America is showing clear signs of systemic decay but the national conversation remains oddly muted.
Bridges are collapsing, public schools are underfunded, and healthcare costs are bankrupting families. Yet mainstream political discourse continues to center around party drama, not the unraveling beneath our feet.
In 2025, nearly 60% of Americans say they’re living paycheck to paycheck, according to a recent CNBC survey. Meanwhile, violent crime in several major cities is at a 10-year high, and trust in government institutions is at a historic low.
“This isn’t just a downturn. This is a foundational crisis,” says historian Jill Lawrence. “And the scary part is how normal it’s beginning to feel.”
So why isn’t anyone screaming from the rooftops? Some blame media distraction, others point to political fatigue. But one thing’s clear: The alarm bells are ringing, and America is dangerously close to tuning them out.
