With over 650,000 people experiencing homelessness across the United States, the crisis is no longer confined to “blue cities” it’s a national emergency. But experts say a single, proven policy could slash those numbers dramatically: Housing First.
Unlike traditional models that require sobriety or employment before receiving housing, the Housing First model simply gives people a home no strings attached and then offers support services.
And the data is staggering.
In Utah, a pilot Housing First program reduced chronic homelessness by 91%. Finland, which adopted the model nationally, now boasts one of the lowest homelessness rates in the developed world.
“It works because it acknowledges a basic truth: You can’t fix your life while sleeping under a freeway,” says Dr. Lisa Martinez, a homelessness researcher.
So why hasn’t the U.S. fully adopted it? Critics cite cost, but proponents argue it’s actually cheaper than managing people through ER visits, jails, and shelters.
“We could solve this crisis tomorrow,” Martinez adds. “We just have to decide we want to.”
