As protests against ICE raids sweep across the country, New York City has seen its share of unrest. More than a dozen demonstrators were arrested Monday night near Union Square after blocking traffic and refusing to disperse.
Police say the protests remained mostly peaceful but note some incidents of vandalism and minor scuffles with officers. Mayor Eric Adams said the city supports the right to protest but drew a hard line at violence.
“Our streets are not battlegrounds,” Adams said. “We will protect the right to protest but also enforce the law.”
Community groups plan more rallies later this week as tensions show no sign of easing.
