A dramatic twist unfolded in Washington this morning as a federal appeals court temporarily reinstated President Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs, just 24 hours after a lower trade court declared them unconstitutional. The decision has reignited debate over presidential trade powers and their long-term impact on the American economy.
The initial ruling, issued by the U.S. Court of International Trade, said Trump overstepped his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by bypassing Congress. The administration quickly filed an emergency appeal, and the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals granted a temporary stay, allowing the tariffs to continue while legal arguments proceed.

Trump, speaking at a rally in Cleveland Thursday night, called the court’s actions “a patriotic move to protect American jobs,” and accused “globalists” of trying to strip him of power. Meanwhile, his critics argue that the tariffs are driving up prices for American consumers and harming international trade relations.
The case is likely headed to the Supreme Court, where it could redefine presidential control over trade policy for generations to come.
