1,593 Nigerians Killed in Road Crashes Over Three Months: Alarming Surge Prompts Call for Action

Tragedy continues to haunt Nigerian highways as a recent report by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) revealed that no fewer than 1,593 lives were lost to road crashes in just three months between January and March 2025.

The report, compiled from national accident data, highlighted speeding, reckless driving, and failure to use seatbelts as leading causes. States with the highest fatalities include Kaduna, Ogun, Kogi, and Anambra.

Corps Marshal Dauda Biu described the numbers as “unacceptable,” vowing to ramp up enforcement operations nationwide. “These deaths are preventable. We must not normalize road carnage,” he stated.

He added that patrol teams would now carry out surprise checks on major highways and penalize transport companies flouting vehicle safety checks.

Public safety advocates are demanding that the government also invest in road infrastructure and implement stricter driver licensing exams. “Bad roads and bad drivers are a deadly combination,” said Onyeka Okafor, a road safety activist based in Enugu.

Victims’ families have started pushing for a national victims’ support fund to help cover medical bills and funeral costs.

The FRSC has urged travelers to report reckless driving and vehicle malfunctions via emergency hotlines, even as they continue awareness campaigns across schools and markets.
