FG to Sell Houses to Low and Middle Income Nigerians in Landmark Housing Initiative

In a renewed effort to tackle Nigeria’s critical housing shortage, the Federal Government has officially launched a mass housing sales initiative targeting low and middle income earners. The plan, which falls under the newly restructured National Affordable Housing Programme (NAHP), aims to put thousands of Nigerian families on the path to homeownership before the end of 2026.

Speaking during the launch event in Abuja, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Musa Bello, emphasized the urgency of bridging Nigeria’s housing deficit, estimated at over 17 million units. “Our people deserve homes they can call their own. This is not charity it is a right we are working hard to fulfill,” he said.

Under the initiative, homes will be sold at subsidized rates to civil servants, teachers, artisans, and other everyday Nigerians, with flexible payment structures that include rent-to-own models and mortgage loans with interest rates below 7%.

Construction has already begun in 12 states, with model homes expected to be ready for inspection in June. Locations include Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Rivers, Kaduna, and the Federal Capital Territory.

Experts in urban planning and real estate have applauded the plan but called for accountability, transparency in allocations, and local content usage to generate employment.

For millions of Nigerians who have long rented or lived in overcrowded conditions, this initiative could mark a turning point. Application portals will open to the public in July 2025.
