Climate Change Fuels Spread of Fungi That ‘Eat You From Inside Out’

 

Scientists are raising alarms about a new health threat emerging in regions affected by climate change: aggressive fungal infections that invade the human body with unprecedented speed and severity. Recent studies reveal that rising temperatures and altered ecosystems are creating ideal conditions for these fungi to thrive and spread.

Termed “necrotrophic fungi” by researchers, these organisms can rapidly consume living tissue, causing infections that are difficult to diagnose and treat. Doctors in several countries, including Brazil, India, and parts of Africa, have reported increasing cases linked to environmental exposure.

Experts warn that climate-driven changes such as prolonged heatwaves, humidity shifts, and deforestation are disrupting microbial balances, giving these fungi a dangerous advantage.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued new guidelines for monitoring fungal outbreaks and investing in medical research to develop effective antifungal drugs.

Public health officials emphasize the importance of awareness, early diagnosis, and improving sanitation to reduce infection risks.
