The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos have announced a temporary closure on Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day, a national U.S. holiday that honors fallen military personnel.
In an official notice posted on its website and social media platforms, the embassy informed the public that all routine visa appointments and consular services would be suspended for the day. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday, May 27.
“Memorial Day is a solemn occasion to reflect on the sacrifices of American service members who gave their lives in the line of duty,” the notice read.

While the holiday is observed in the U.S., it also resonates with American diplomatic outposts around the world, including Nigeria, where the United States maintains strong bilateral ties in security, economy, and cultural exchanges.
Nigerian citizens and U.S. nationals seeking emergency services were advised to use emergency hotlines listed on the embassy’s website.
In past years, the embassy has marked Memorial Day with private wreath laying ceremonies and messages from U.S. ambassadors. This year’s ceremony, however, is expected to be low key amid global security concerns.
