Tragedy on the East River: Mexican Navy Tall Ship Collides with Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries.

A routine training voyage turned deadly last weekend when the Mexican Navy’s tall ship, Cuauhtémoc, collided with the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries.

The accident occurred on May 17 when the Cuauhtémoc, a majestic sail training vessel, reportedly lost power in the East River just yards from the bridge’s massive pillars. Unable to regain control, the ship’s towering masts struck the underside of the bridge, causing extensive damage to its rigging and deck.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, evacuating crew members and assisting injured bystanders on nearby vessels and the riverbank. The deceased are believed to be crew members caught in the ship’s rigging during the sudden impact.

Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the mechanical failure that led to the loss of power, with initial reports pointing to an engine malfunction combined with strong currents and winds.

The incident caused significant disruption to one of New York’s busiest waterways, prompting temporary closures and inspections of the Brooklyn Bridge’s infrastructure.

Mexican naval officials expressed condolences to the families affected and promised full cooperation with U.S. investigators.
