A wave of fear has gripped parts of the Bayelsa metropolis following a string of violent attacks by gunmen suspected to be cultists, leaving several residents dead or severely injured.
The attacks, which occurred across several adjoining communities in Yenagoa, have sparked panic and outrage, with many locals abandoning their homes or closing businesses early to avoid being caught in the violence.
According to eyewitness reports, the gunmen stormed the areas in broad daylight, wielding dangerous weapons and firing sporadically. “We heard gunshots everywhere. People were running, crying. They just came in and started attacking,” said a shop owner in one of the affected neighborhoods.
The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the incidents and said efforts are underway to restore order. Police spokesperson Asinim Butswat revealed that patrols have been intensified, and arrests are ongoing, though the exact number of casualties remains unclear.

“We are working to track down those responsible for these brutal acts. The safety of our citizens remains our top priority,” Butswat said.
Community leaders have called for immediate government intervention, warning that the violence, if left unchecked, could spiral into full-blown gang warfare.
“This is no longer street rivalry it’s pure terror,” said Chief Boma Agala, a local elder. “We need serious security presence here before more lives are lost.”
The recent spike in cult-related violence comes as the state continues to grapple with youth unemployment and rising drug use factors believed to be fueling the crisis.
