The U.S. Supreme Court has delivered a major blow to environmental activists by ruling that the government can fast-track infrastructure projects without lengthy environmental reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
In a 6-3 decision, the Court sided with developers and energy companies, saying NEPA had become “a tool of obstruction” rather than protection. The ruling allows federal agencies to approve projects like highways, oil pipelines, and offshore wind farms with limited ecological impact assessments.

Environmental groups have reacted with outrage. “This is a rollback of 50 years of environmental safeguards,” said Sierra Club President Naomi Turner. Legal experts say the decision could open floodgates for fossil fuel infrastructure while minimizing public input.
The Biden administration says it will review the ruling and issue new guidelines to balance development with environmental sustainability.
