Former Nigerian presidential candidate Peter Obi has been announced as the inaugural Chair of the African Economic Reform Alliance (AERA) a new coalition of former leaders, economists, and technocrats aimed at accelerating youth-driven innovation and economic development across the continent.
The alliance, headquartered in Accra and supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB), brings together experts from over 15 African countries to design and promote policy solutions focused on entrepreneurship, digital inclusion, and public sector reform.
In a joint press release issued Friday, AERA stated that Obi was selected for his “principled leadership, economic expertise, and strong youth appeal.”

“Africa’s future depends on unlocking the ideas and potential of our young population,” Obi said during a virtual briefing. “We must rethink how governments support innovation, education, and investment.”
Obi, a former governor and respected economic voice, has long been vocal about shifting Nigeria and Africa toward a productivity-based economy. As chair, he is expected to lead strategic partnerships with universities, incubators, and policy institutes across the continent.

His appointment has been welcomed by both local and international observers, with many citing his track record of fiscal responsibility and youth advocacy.
The alliance’s first economic summit is scheduled for November 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda.
