In one of the largest drug busts in recent history, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) announced the seizure of opioid consignments worth over N6.5 billion at seaports in Lagos and Rivers States. The haul, which included high grade synthetic opioids concealed within industrial containers, has sent shockwaves through the international narcotics enforcement community.
According to a statement released on Sunday evening by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the two week long operation involved undercover surveillance, coordination with port authorities, and assistance from international law enforcement agencies.
Two British nationals, believed to be key operatives of a transnational drug cartel, were arrested during the raid in Apapa Port, Lagos. NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) confirmed that the suspects were caught while attempting to supervise the offloading of disguised shipments containing pharmaceutical grade opioids without valid documentation.

“The scale and sophistication of this operation show that Nigeria is being targeted by powerful global drug networks,” Marwa said. “But our message is clear: we will intercept, arrest, and dismantle every node of this criminal supply chain.”
Sources close to the investigation revealed that the opioids including Fentanyl derivatives were intended for distribution across West Africa and parts of Europe.
This bust comes just months after the NDLEA launched its Ports and Borders Taskforce Initiative, which has already led to multiple seizures and arrests.
Marwa praised the cooperation of the Nigerian Ports Authority and hinted at more international links being investigated. The arrested suspects are expected to be arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos later this week.
