Namibia Observes First Genocide Remembrance Day

In a powerful moment of historical reckoning, Namibia marked its first ever Genocide Remembrance Day on May 29, paying tribute to over 100,000 Herero and Nama people who were killed by German colonial forces between 1904 and 1908.

The event, held in the capital Windhoek, featured speeches, cultural displays, and calls for Germany to fully acknowledge the atrocity as a genocide under international law and to pay reparations.

“This is not just about history. It’s about dignity, justice, and healing for generations to come,” said President Nangolo Mbumba.

Germany issued a formal apology in 2021, but activists say the response has lacked sincerity and substance.
