In a historic breakthrough for global sports leadership, Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry has been elected as the first African and first woman to serve as President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
A former Olympic swimmer and longtime minister in Zimbabwe’s government, Coventry pledged to bring greater inclusivity and transparency to the world’s most powerful sports organization.

“This is not just a victory for Africa it’s a victory for every young girl who dreams beyond borders,” Coventry said after the vote.
Her appointment has been met with celebration across Africa, with Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa hailing it as “a proud moment in our history.”
Coventry takes the reins at a time when the IOC is battling corruption allegations and reevaluating the future of the Olympic Games amid climate and cost concerns.
