Poland is bracing for political gridlock after conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki narrowly won the presidency, setting up a fierce standoff with Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s centrist government.
The outcome, while democratic, threatens to stall major reforms promised by Tusk’s coalition, especially around Poland’s controversial judiciary laws. Nawrocki, a known Euroskeptic, has already clashed with Brussels over judicial independence and civil rights.

Political analysts fear the country may enter a new era of legislative paralysis, with both leaders holding opposing visions of Poland’s future in the European Union.
“It’s a recipe for conflict,” said Marta Zaremba, a political science professor in Kraków. “The president controls the veto, and the government lacks the supermajority to override it.”
