Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has once again signaled his intention to contest in Nigeria’s next presidential election, declaring that he must appear on the ballot in 2027.
Speaking about the future of Nigeria’s democracy, Obi emphasized the importance of free and fair elections, urging the ruling party and electoral authorities to ensure that the democratic process remains transparent and credible.
“In 2027, I must be on the ballot. The ruling party has 30 governors let them allow a free and fair election. Why beat around the bush?” Obi said in remarks circulating online.
Call for a Level Playing Field
Obi also stressed that the political competition should be fair for all candidates.
“Bring the ball to the pitch on fair ground; whoever wins should rule. Nobody is running away.”
The former Anambra State governor added that Nigeria belongs to all citizens and no political group should believe it has exclusive control over power.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us. Nobody has a monopoly on rascality.”
Political Context
Obi was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (Nigeria) in the 2023 election and remains one of the most influential opposition figures in the country.
The current president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is widely expected to seek re-election in the 2027 Nigerian general election.
Obi’s latest comments suggest that the opposition is already preparing for the next political battle while emphasizing the need for a credible electoral process.
Growing Debate Ahead of 2027
As Nigeria moves toward the next election cycle, discussions about electoral reforms, voter participation, and transparency are expected to intensify.
For many Nigerians, the key issue will be whether the next election can deliver a truly fair contest that reflects the will of the people.
