Belgium Says US-Israeli Strikes on Iran Violate International Law

In a strong diplomatic statement, Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said the recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran do not meet international law standards and constitute violations of established legal frameworks.

The announcement comes amid escalating military action in the Middle East, with Iran, the United States, and Israel engaged in strikes and counterstrikes.

What Belgium Said

The strikes “do not meet the standards of international law”, according to Prévot.

Belgium is urging de-escalation and a return to diplomatic efforts rather than unilateral military action.

While emphasizing concern for civilian safety, Belgium stopped short of condemning Iran directly, focusing instead on the legality of the military operations.

“International law exists to protect lives and maintain peace. Military interventions must respect these principles,” Prévot said.

Belgium is not alone in questioning the strikes:

Turkey called the strikes a “clear violation of international law.”

Spain said the interventions were not backed by international law.

The UN Secretary-General urged diplomacy, warning unilateral attacks could escalate tensions further.

Meanwhile, some Western officials argue that the strikes are lawful acts of self-defense, highlighting a deep divide among nations on the legality of these actions.

Why It Matters

The statement underscores the legal and ethical debates surrounding the ongoing Iran conflict.

It highlights the risk that unilateral military action, even in the name of defense, could spark wider international criticism and destabilization.

The situation illustrates how military escalation in one region can trigger global diplomatic disputes over legality and accountability.

Experts stress that respecting international law is critical to prevent further escalation and protect civilian lives.
