Netanyahu Promises Quick Gaza Offensive to Defeat Hamas

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to launch a swift new offensive in Gaza to defeat Hamas and free hostages held by the militant group. Speaking after his security cabinet approved the plan, Netanyahu said he had no choice but to “complete the job” and take control of Gaza City, the enclave’s largest population center.

The situation on the ground is tense and deadly. Israeli airstrikes have intensified over Gaza City, with reports of casualties including civilians and journalists. At least five people were killed at a sandwich shop in the Sabra neighborhood, according to health officials at Shifa Hospital. Tragically, a missile strike near the hospital also took the lives of several journalists, including five Al Jazeera staff members.

Israel’s military claims one of the journalists killed was a Hamas operative disguising himself as press, a claim disputed by human rights experts. The attacks come amid growing international concern, as the U.N. Security Council hears calls for an end to the suffering in Gaza.

Netanyahu emphasized that the offensive will focus on two remaining Hamas strongholds and said the operation would happen “fairly quickly.” He added that Israel aims to establish “safe zones” in Gaza City to allow civilians to move away from combat areas though many Palestinians remain skeptical given past experiences.

Despite the military push, Netanyahu insists Israel does not plan to occupy Gaza permanently but wants to secure a “security belt” along its border. The military has warned, however, that a wider invasion could put hostages at risk and drag Israeli forces into prolonged, dangerous guerrilla warfare.

As tensions rise, the world watches closely, hoping for a resolution that ends the violence and protects innocent lives caught in the crossfire.
