European Leaders Stand Firm With Ukraine After Zelensky Rejects Trump’s “Land for Peace” Idea

The message from Kyiv could not have been clearer. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, visibly angry, shot down U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion that peace with Russia might involve handing over parts of Ukraine’s land.

“Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier,” Zelensky declared on Saturday. “We will not give Russia any awards for what it has done.”

The pushback came just days before Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska in a bid to negotiate an end to the war. Trump has hinted that his talks could involve “some swapping of territories”  an idea that has set off alarm bells in Ukraine and across Europe.

European leaders wasted no time rallying behind Kyiv. In a rare joint statement, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland, and the European Commission made it clear: any peace deal must protect both Ukraine’s sovereignty and Europe’s security.

“We share the conviction that a diplomatic solution must protect Ukraine’s and Europe’s vital security interests,” the statement read. Leaders warned that compromising Ukraine’s borders could jeopardize the stability of the entire continent.

As the Alaska meeting looms, tensions are high not only between Ukraine and Russia, but also over what role Western allies and political powerbrokers will play in shaping the war’s endgame.
