The war in Gaza is about to enter a new and dangerous chapter. On Friday, Israeli officials confirmed plans to take over Gaza City, a move that could reshape the battlefield and worsen an already dire humanitarian crisis.
This isn’t just another military maneuver. For nearly two years, Gaza has been battered by relentless airstrikes and ground assaults, leaving tens of thousands dead, most of the population homeless, and entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble. Food is scarce. Hospitals are barely functioning. And now, the city at the heart of Gaza’s identity could soon be under full Israeli control.
An official familiar with the plan says the takeover will be “gradual,” with no start date yet announced. But the scale of what’s coming is clear: thousands of troops, forced evacuations, and a military push that will almost certainly deepen the suffering of civilians and further endanger the Israeli hostages still trapped inside Gaza.

The announcement has set off alarm bells at the United Nations, which will hold an emergency meeting Sunday morning to address Israel’s plans. Behind the scenes, mediators from Egypt and Qatar are racing to finalize a deal: all hostages released, in exchange for a complete end to the war and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
But in an interview just a day earlier, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed even bigger ambitions not just Gaza City, but all of Gaza under Israeli control. Right now, Israel already controls about three-quarters of the territory. If Netanyahu’s words are any indication, this fight may be far from over.
