It was meant to be an ordinary flight to North Carolina but just minutes after takeoff, terror gripped the cabin as passengers looked out the window and saw flames shooting from the wing.
An American Airlines jet headed to Charlotte was forced to make an emergency landing on Wednesday morning after one of its engines caught fire mid air. The flight had just departed from Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport when disaster struck.
It was like something out of a movie, said one passenger, describing the moment black smoke trailed behind the aircraft. Onboard were 153 passengers and six crew members, all of whom were uninjured thanks to the pilots’ swift decision to return to the airport.
Videos now circulating on social media show the plane in the sky with fire visibly spurting from one of its engines, leaving behind a trail of thick smoke.

From the ground, construction worker Richard Pedrosa told the Las Vegas Review Journal he heard a loud bang, looked up, and saw the jet with its engine ablaze. You could hear it before you saw it then we looked up and saw fire coming out the side, he said.
Airport emergency crews were on standby as the plane landed safely back in Las Vegas. The FAA has launched an investigation into what caused the engine failure.
For now, passengers are safe but shaken. And for many of them, it’s a flight they’ll never forget.
