In a stunning and unapologetic declaration, Nigerian Nobel Laureate and outspoken global activist Wole Soyinka has accused world leaders of fueling corruption and protecting criminal interests at the highest levels of power.
“All the presidents in this world are corrupt and criminal,” Soyinka said during a panel discussion on global governance and accountability in Lagos. “They wear suits, they shake hands, they speak of peace but behind the scenes, they are the architects of poverty, war, and organized theft.”
The crowd fell silent as Soyinka, 90, continued his fiery critique, pointing fingers not just at African leaders but at heads of state from the U.S., Europe, Asia, and beyond.
“From Washington to Paris, Abuja to Moscow what we see are rulers who prioritize power over people, money over justice. They campaign on hope, and govern with greed.”
The statement has since gone viral, triggering worldwide debate. Some are praising Soyinka as a rare voice of truth, while others accuse him of oversimplifying global politics.
On X (formerly Twitter), hashtags like #GlobalCorruption and #SoyinkaTruth have exploded, with thousands weighing in on whether his statement reflects reality or just rising frustration.
“He’s not wrong,” one user wrote. “From war profiteering to election rigging to hiding billions in offshore accounts what more proof do we need?”
Diplomats and political analysts have called Soyinka’s remarks “deeply provocative,” warning that such sweeping claims could strain international relations. But others say he’s simply articulating what many citizens around the world already feel but are too afraid to say.
This isn’t the first time Soyinka has clashed with the world’s elite. Known for his fearless activism during Nigeria’s military regimes, he has spent decades calling out injustice, no matter who’s in power.
Now, in 2025, his words are hitting harder than ever. “Until we stop worshipping these criminals as ‘leaders,’” he said, “nothing will change.”
