Austria is in mourning after a horrific school shooting in the city of Graz, where a lone gunman opened fire early Tuesday morning, killing 10 students and teachers and injuring at least 12 more.
Authorities say the shooter was a 19-year-old former student with a known history of mental illness and online extremism. He was later shot and killed by police during a standoff.
“It was like a nightmare… we heard screaming and then silence,” said one survivor.
Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen called it “a dark day for our nation” and has ordered all flags flown at half-staff. The incident is reigniting debates around gun laws and mental health care in Europe.
