America watched in horror as news broke that State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were gunned down in what authorities are calling a “politically motivated hit.” The shooter, dressed as a police officer, ambushed them outside their home. Investigators discovered a target list of political opponents in his car and chillingly, State Senator John Hoffman, also on that list, was critically wounded.
Protest flyers from the “No Kings” movement were recovered from the suspect’s vehicle, raising fears that the line between protest and political warfare has been crossed.
“This wasn’t just an attack on two people. This was an attack on democracy itself.”
Security has been heightened across the country for lawmakers. As fear spreads, Americans are asking: how close are we to full-blown political violence becoming the norm?
