Across the country, the cost of sacrificial rams has tripled, with some markets in Lagos and Kano pricing medium-sized animals between ₦350,000 and ₦500,000 far beyond the reach of many families.
“Last year, I bought a ram for ₦150,000. This year, I couldn’t even bargain under ₦400,000,” lamented one buyer at the Agege Livestock Market in Lagos.
Inflation, fuel price hikes, and the continued devaluation of the naira have worsened purchasing power across Nigeria. Many families are opting for shared sacrifices or skipping the ritual entirely a stark contrast to the festive abundance typically associated with the holiday.
Imams across Nigeria have called for compassion and unity during the celebrations, urging those who can afford it to share with those in need.
