Tinubu Commissions African Medical Centre, Secures $2.2 Billion for Health Sector Reform

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially commissioned the state-of-the-art African Medical Centre for Excellence (AMCE) in Abuja, a major milestone in Nigeria’s push for healthcare modernization. At the event, the President revealed that Nigeria had secured over $2.2 billion in funding to overhaul the country’s healthcare sector.

The facility, a collaboration between Nigeria, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), and King’s College London, is expected to significantly reduce medical tourism and improve access to advanced treatment, especially for cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and kidney related conditions.

“Healthcare is not a privilege. It is a right. And my government is determined to deliver it,” Tinubu declared at the launch.

The President also announced that the newly secured health sector fund would be channeled into building diagnostic labs, equipping primary health centres, and training medical personnel across all 36 states.

Analysts say this could mark a turning point for a country where thousands travel abroad yearly for medical treatment.
