Over 40 people, including children and healthcare workers, were killed in a deadly attack on Al Mujlad Hospital in Sudan over the weekend, according to the head of the World Health Organization.
The strike occurred Saturday in West Kordofan, near the front line of fierce fighting between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), whose violent conflict has devastated the region since April 2023.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed the death toll and expressed deep concern over the continued targeting of health infrastructure in Sudan. “We call again for the attacks on health care to stop. These are grave violations of international humanitarian law,” he said, without assigning blame to any party.

The WHO’s Sudan office reported that among the dead were six children and five medical personnel, and that the hospital sustained extensive damage. The assault has crippled one of the few functioning health facilities in the region, where medical access is already dangerously limited.
While the origin of the strike remains officially unconfirmed, Emergency Lawyers, a Sudanese human rights group, accused the Sudanese Army of launching a drone attack on the hospital. In a statement issued Sunday, the group reported a lower initial death toll of nine, but it has since risen dramatically.
Al Mujlad Hospital served as a lifeline for civilians trapped in the crossfire of a brutal civil war. Humanitarian organizations are warning that such attacks further collapse already fragile services and put thousands of lives at greater risk.
As of now, neither the Sudanese Army nor the RSF has claimed responsibility for the attack. The United Nations and international rights groups are calling for an independent investigation into the incident and urgent protection for medical facilities and humanitarian workers on the ground.
