At a Georgia manufacturing plant on Thursday, Vice President JD Vance went on the offensive against the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), blasting its latest analysis of President Trump’s signature economic package which critics say favors the rich while leaving the poorest Americans worse off.
“Sometimes they put out reports that are absolutely atrocious, and I think this is a good example of a very atrocious report,” Vance told the crowd in Peachtree City, earning loud applause.
The CBO’s report requested by Democrats painted a stark picture. According to their projections, the top 10% of earners will see an average annual windfall of $13,600 over the next decade. Meanwhile, the bottom 10% of Americans will lose out, with an average decrease of $1,200 per year.
Vance, however, rejected the findings and instead touted provisions he says directly target working families, such as no tax on tips and no tax on overtime pay.
“If you’re working hard and you’re working overtime, you’re going to get a big fat tax cut,” Vance said. “If you’re working at a restaurant or some other business where you’re earning your wages primarily through tips, you’re going to get a big fat tax cut. And most importantly, the president’s economic policies are going to prevent your job from being shipped off to Asia or to Mexico.”
Framing the law as a defense of the American worker, Vance added:
“If you’re working hard, the government ought to leave you alone.”
The Trump administration and congressional Republicans have been pushing the package under a new slogan “working families tax cuts” a pivot from Trump’s earlier branding of the law as the “big, beautiful bill.”
Still, the CBO report complicates that message, suggesting the benefits may not flow evenly to all households. For Democrats, the analysis bolsters their criticism that the tax package is another handout to the wealthy. For Republicans, the fight now is not just about numbers on a spreadsheet, but about who gets to define the narrative: a tax plan for billionaires or a rescue plan for the working class.
