The target was described as a potential future leader of the group in Syria. The raid took place in the town of Atmeh, Idlib province, and was supported by helicopters and drones. Local Syrian forces set up a security perimeter while U.S. troops carried out the direct operation.

Witnesses reported hearing English commands during the raid, while others described voices with an Iraqi accent. The official said no U.S. soldiers were injured.

This marks the second major U.S. operation in northern Syria since the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad in December. The new Syrian-led government has pledged to stop ISIS from regaining power and is working with the U.S.-led coalition in that effort.

Idlib has long been a hiding place for ISIS leaders. In recent years, U.S. operations in the region have eliminated several high-ranking figures, including Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2019 and his successor Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi in 2022.
