In a move sparking national controversy, President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of more than 2,000 National Guard troops and U.S. Marines to Los Angeles in response to growing protests over recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.
The protests, ignited by a series of high-profile ICE operations targeting undocumented families, quickly escalated into violent confrontations. As of Tuesday morning, over 100 individuals have been arrested, and several public buildings in downtown L.A. were damaged.
The Trump administration insists the military action is necessary to “restore law and order,” but civil rights groups have condemned the decision as a dangerous overreach of executive power.
“This isn’t just about immigration anymore,” said Sandra Velasquez, a community organizer in East L.A. “This is about militarizing our streets to silence dissent.”
