Upper Manhattan neighborhoods will soon see dozens of new surveillance cameras after a major investment from the New York State safety initiative fund.
The NYPD says the cameras will be placed in high-crime corridors, including parts of Harlem and Washington Heights, to deter gun violence and aid investigations.
Privacy advocates have raised concerns about surveillance creep, while local leaders argue it’s a necessary step to improve safety.
“This isn’t about watching people, it’s about protecting them,” said Councilwoman Karina Morales, who represents the 10th District.
