“WE WILL NEVER FORGET!” - NIGERIANS REJECT BABANGIDA’S ATTEMPT TO REWRITE HISTORY

Former military ruler, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), may have returned with the intention to “rewrite history,” but Nigerians are not buying it.

After years of silence, Babangida recently resurfaced, claiming he’s ready to correct how history has portrayed his regime. But the move has been met with fierce resistance and bitter reminders from citizens who lived through his controversial leadership.

“You can write all you want, but we will never forget what you did,” one angry Nigerian tweeted. “You cannot delete June 12. You cannot erase the pain. You cannot rewrite the truth.”

From the annulment of the 1993 presidential election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigerian history to the culture of corruption and oppression under his regime, Babangida’s legacy remains a heavy wound in the hearts of many.

Even as he attempts to reshape the narrative, Nigerians are speaking out:

“History is not a chalkboard. You don’t get to wipe it clean.”

“The ghosts of June 12 will forever haunt your name.”

“Rewriting history won’t heal what your regime destroyed.”

Analysts believe this move may be a strategic attempt to clean up his legacy before he exits the stage of life, but it appears too late for a redemption arc.

For most Nigerians, Babangida’s chapter in history has already been written in pain, protests, and betrayal.

And no matter how many books he publishes or speeches he delivers, the people say they will never forget.
