The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has praised the Borno State Government for taking decisive action in the fight against child malnutrition by inaugurating a state-wide Committee on Food and Nutrition.
The newly formed committee, launched earlier this week, signals a renewed commitment by the state to address the persistent nutrition crisis affecting children and vulnerable populations across Borno. The initiative is part of a broader effort to implement sustainable strategies that improve food security, reduce child mortality, and promote long-term development in a region still recovering from years of insurgency.
In a statement issued by UNICEF, the agency described the committee as a “critical step” toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to zero hunger and good health and well-being.

“This move by the Borno State Government reflects strong leadership and a deep sense of responsibility toward the health and future of its children,” the statement read. “UNICEF stands ready to support the state in ensuring that no child suffers from preventable malnutrition.”
The committee is expected to coordinate nutrition-focused interventions across multiple sectors, including health, education, agriculture, and social welfare. It will also monitor the implementation of nutrition policies and mobilize resources to scale up effective programs.
With Borno State ranked among the highest in Nigeria for childhood malnutrition rates, this initiative could prove to be a turning point in reversing years of nutritional deficits and building a healthier generation.
