Time for EFCC Chairman to Resign - Public Outrage Grows Over Corruption Allegations

Calls for the resignation of the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have intensified, as growing allegations of internal corruption, bias, and selective prosecution continue to erode public trust in Nigeria’s top anti-graft agency.

Across social media platforms and public forums, Nigerians are increasingly demanding a leadership shake-up at the EFCC, arguing that the agency has failed to live up to its mission of transparency, fairness, and accountability.

“The EFCC has become a political tool rather than an anti-corruption institution,” said Lagos-based rights activist, Sadiq Bello. “The time has come for the chairman to resign honorably and allow for a full reform of the agency.”

This growing wave of discontent follows a series of controversial cases where the EFCC has been accused of targeting low-level offenders while turning a blind eye to well-connected politicians and government officials. Many citizens have pointed to recent arrests of small business owners and youth on vague internet fraud claims, while high-profile looters enjoy immunity or prolonged court delays.

“Justice in Nigeria is now for sale, and the EFCC chair is at the center of the mess,” read a viral post on X (formerly Twitter) that has sparked thousands of retweets and public debates.

Meanwhile, civil society groups have begun mobilizing for protests and official petitions, urging President Bola Tinubu to either reform the EFCC or dissolve its leadership entirely.

“The credibility of the anti-corruption war is on life support,” said Ayo Ige of the Civic Action Network. “If the EFCC chairman truly believes in the integrity of his office, he should step aside for a full independent investigation.”
