Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mallam Mele Kyari, has dismissed reports circulating online that he is currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a statement released on Friday, Kyari described the claims as “false, mischievous, and intentionally misleading.” He clarified that he is not under any investigation or detention, and is instead taking a well-deserved rest after 34 years of continuous service to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
“I have not been invited or detained by any anti-corruption agency. I am currently resting and reflecting on my career journey,” Kyari said.
He also expressed concern over what he called the increasing trend of disinformation, warning that such unverified news reports not only damage personal reputations but also undermine the country’s institutions and global image.
“Those who spread lies without verification are doing serious harm to our nation,” he added, urging the media to uphold professionalism and accuracy in their reporting.

Kyari reaffirmed his commitment to accountability and transparency, stating he remains available to respond to any lawful inquiries or official clarifications when called upon.
This clarification comes amid a wave of public speculation surrounding the exit of several key figures in Nigeria’s oil sector, sparking demands for more transparency in the management of national resources.
