Three Police Officers Detained Over Death of Suspect in Kebbi State Custody

The Nigerian Police Force is once again under scrutiny following the detention of three officers linked to the suspicious death of a suspect while in custody in Kebbi State.

According to early reports, the unnamed suspect died under unclear circumstances shortly after being arrested by officers attached to the divisional station in Argungu. The incident has triggered outrage in the local community and calls for justice from human rights groups.

Sources say the suspect was allegedly tortured while in detention, though police authorities have not confirmed the cause of death. The Kebbi State Police Command responded swiftly by arresting and detaining the three officers pending a full investigation.

“We are committed to transparency and accountability. The officers involved have been taken into custody, and a proper investigation is underway,” said Police Public Relations Officer DSP Nafiu Abubakar.

The family of the deceased is demanding an independent investigation, claiming they were denied access to their relative during his detention. Advocacy groups, including the Nigeria Human Rights Watch Coalition, have condemned the incident as yet another sign of systemic abuse within law enforcement.

“This is not an isolated case,” said the coalition in a statement. “We have seen too many Nigerians die in custody. The police must be reformed from the inside out.”

The incident comes at a time when public trust in the police remains fragile following past cases of extrajudicial killings, harassment, and custodial abuse.

As the investigation unfolds, many Nigerians are asking the same question: Will justice truly be served?
