Man Arrested in Cedar Rapids After Fatal Altercation: “I Just Felt Like Killing Him,” Suspect Says



A local man was taken into custody late Sunday night following a deadly incident that has shaken the quiet community of Cedar Rapids. Authorities say 32-year-old Jason Mitchell was arrested for the fatal stabbing of 29-year-old Marcus Reynolds outside a neighborhood convenience store.


According to Cedar Rapids Police Department, the two men reportedly got into a verbal dispute that quickly escalated. Witnesses say the argument appeared spontaneous and intense, ending tragically when Mitchell pulled out a knife and stabbed Reynolds multiple times.


In a chilling confession to officers at the scene, Mitchell reportedly said,

“No one paid me. I just felt like killing him.”


Reynolds was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center within minutes of the attack. Police say there is currently no known motive or prior history between the two men.


Chief Investigator Laura Hastings stated,


“This was a senseless act of violence that has left our community reeling. We are working diligently to understand what triggered this deadly confrontation.”


Mitchell was charged with first-degree murder and held without bail pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for next week.

Neighbors expressed shock and sadness at the news, describing both men as quiet residents who generally kept to themselves.


“I never expected anything like this in our neighborhood,” said longtime resident Karen Mills. “It’s heartbreaking.”

Cedar Rapids Police urge anyone with additional information to come forward as the investigation continues.
