In a powerful speech to Canadian lawmakers, King Charles III issued a rare and forceful statement defending Canada’s sovereignty against rising political pressure from Washington.
Speaking from the historic Parliament Hill, King Charles reaffirmed Canada’s independence and democratic values, pushing back against remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently implied that the U.S. had a “moral claim” over parts of North America due to shared history and military influence.
“Canada stands as a proud and independent nation,” the King declared, in a speech carefully crafted with the guidance of Prime Minister Mark Carney. “Our ties with the United Kingdom, and our friendships around the world, are bonds of choice not submission.”

Trump’s comments, made at a campaign rally in Ohio, sparked outrage in both Ottawa and London. Canadian officials have since increased diplomatic talks with NATO allies, reaffirming commitments to national defense.
The speech comes at a time when U.S. Canada relations are strained due to tariffs, immigration policy, and energy disputes. Analysts say the monarch’s public defense marks a significant shift in the usually neutral stance of the Crown.

Protesters outside the Parliament waved both Canadian flags and signs reading “Hands Off Canada,” while social media erupted in support of King Charles’ bold message.
More responses from Washington are expected in the coming days.
