Global Coral Bleaching Event Affects 84% of World’s Reefs

Scientists have revealed alarming new data showing that 84% of the world’s coral reefs have experienced bleaching due to rising ocean temperatures and environmental stressors in 2025. This bleaching event, the most severe recorded to date, threatens marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of millions dependent on healthy reefs.

The comprehensive study, published by an international coalition of marine researchers, highlights that coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific region, Caribbean Sea, and parts of the Great Barrier Reef are among the hardest hit. Bleaching occurs when corals expel the symbiotic algae living in their tissues, causing them to turn white and become more vulnerable to disease.

Experts warn that if greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated, many reefs could face irreversible damage within decades, disrupting fisheries, tourism, and coastal protection. The report calls for urgent global action, including reducing carbon footprints, enforcing marine protected areas, and investing in coral restoration technologies.
